Village leaders have pledged to review road safety after a young driver died after crashing into a cottage in north Suffolk.

Twenty-two-year-old Jack Holyoak died as a result of a collision in Fressingfield, which was the second time the same house had been hit by a car in three years.

The chairman of the parish council yesterday said that residents had been concerned about safety on the B1116 Harleston Road for a number of years.

Prue Rush said a flashing 30mph sign was installed two years ago, but Fressingfield Parish Council would be looking at other traffic calming measures following the incident on Friday night.

“The council has raised concerns about speeding in the village. It is a very narrow road and a very busy area and we need people to slow down.”

“I do not know what happened on Friday but it is an area we have been very aware of for a number of years and obviously it is something we have to look at again and make sure it is safe and warn people of the dangers,” she said.

Jack Holyoak, of Horham, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Vauxhall Vectra he was driving crashed into Hill House at about 9.30pm on Friday.

The incident was a near repeat of an incident in February 2007 when a car crashed into Val and Dusty Smith's home, which caused significant damage, but no fatal injuries.

Guy McGregor, local county councillor and portfolio holder for roads, transport and planning at Suffolk County Council, added: “One is terribly sorry at this tragic loss of a young life. Suffolk County Council has an active policy in road safety and visit schools and organisations to give information to young drivers and do our best to draw attention to issues.”

The family of Mr Holyoak paid tribute to “a fine young man” at the weekend. Tony and Janet Holyoak said they were struggling to come to terms with their immeasurable loss.
