The Suffolk Walking Festival has come to a close with more than 120 walks held to improve and promote access into the county’s countryside regions.

The festival, which ran from May 12 to June 3, included a tour around the ‘Saints’ area near Bungay, one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of the Waveney region.

Organised by Keith Parker, 28 walkers and three dogs enjoyed a six mile tour commencing at Manor Farm and following bridle paths through farmland and meadows. The tour was led by local historian Christopher Reeve, who pointed out features of interest along the ancient Shoe Devil Lane, to St Margaret’s Church, Ilketshall, and then to St Peter’s Hall where food and pints of the brewery beer were enjoyed.

Paul Jackson, a tree surgeon, provided information about the variety of trees along the route, and Jenni Jepson identified the rich profusion of wild flowers.

After a four hour trek, the tour ended at Constitution Hill, above Fen Farm in Flixton, which commands one of the finest panoramic views in the whole of the Waveney Valley.

The proceeds of the event go to the local branch of Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
