BUILDING work is due to start soon on flats in Beccles for people recovering from mental health problems.

The controversial plans to build on land on the corner of Noel's Walk and Pig Lane were approved by planners last July.

Suffolk Heritage Housing Association was granted planning permission for the construction of supported move-on accommodation comprising of eight flats.

The association had previously been granted permission to build on the site in June 2008 but the plans involved a land swap that would have seen the flats replace a playground with the rest of the plot being transformed into a public open space.

But the association later put forward a plan to build on an adjacent plot housing derelict garages.

Development on that land was vehemently opposed by local residents when similar plans were turned down in 2007 and again in January 2008.

Suffolk Heritage said that it had changed its mind because of “insurmountable” problems with the swap.

A spokeswoman for the association said that its building contractor Wellington is due to start work on the site imminently and the project is expected to be completed by next April.
