BUNGAY will want to forget their debut in the Bob Carter Cup after a disastrous performance led to an eight wicket defeat at Alliance Division Two side Saham Toney on Sunday.

Half the team got lost on the way to the ground and the game was delayed by 15 minutes. The middle order pair of captain David Fuller and Thomas York were forced to open the batting on a green wicket.

The pair started brightly enough, Fuller clipping the ball for four in the first over to score Bungay's first runs in Norfolk's premier cup competition. Both openers were cautious until a lapse in concentration by York saw him caught for just one.

Fuller was joined by his younger brother Chris and the pair calmly negotiated their way through the opening 15 overs. The Bungay captain looked in good form as he took the attack to the Australian overseas star G Maxwell, hitting him for three boundaries and a big six as the pair brought up the 50 partnership.

The experienced I Lovick made the crucial breakthrough, taking a smart catch off his own bowling to dismiss C Fuller for 16. At 56-2 Bungay were still in the game but when Fuller edged behind for a well made 31, they were struggling at 60-3.

Disaster struck as the next six wickets fell for just one run as the spin of Maxwell and Lovick tore through the Bungay middle and lower order. It was thanks to a last-wicket stand of 19 between H Haines and D Mowday that took the score to 79 and Bungay had been embarrassingly bowled out by 1.05pm, before the lunch break.

After lunch the Bungay side were looking to impose themselves on the game and Fuller in particular seemed in determined mood as he first removed Botwright for four and then Lovick for nought to set the nerves in the dressing room going.

Maxwell joined the Saham captain S Mower at the crease and the pair began to rebuild. Mower in particular looked to get the game over early as he struck four boundaries and one six off one W Lewis over to effectively end the game.

Maxwell who hit the winning runs and Saham Toney reached their victory target in the 16th over.
