WITH generous sponsorship from the local home improvement company Waveney Windows, Bungay Bowls Club will host a mixed triples bowls tournament at their green on Sunday.

Organiser Ian Gosling has attracted around 20 triples to compete for to compete for the Secretary's Shield including Bungay's Ann Swanston and Joyce Read from Lowestoft Railway.

Other Bungay members to enter triples are Keith Brown, Jimmy Caplin, Les Knowles, Tony Murphy, Peter Nunn and Barbara Wortley. Qualifying matches start at 9am with finals around 4.45pm.

Spectators are welcome and refreshments will be served from the pavilion.

Bungay's final match in Division One of the Lowestoft Area Men's Triples League was away at Beccles Conservatives and was once again the key game of the season.

Last season Beccles achieved the half point they required to avoid relegation with the last wood of the last end of the last rink to finish. This year that same half point would guarantee them a place in the County League play-offs.

Bungay needed all of the seven available points to pip Beccles, but in the end they could only win one rink and lost the match overall to finish outside the top two. Halesworth, as league champions for the fourth consecutive time, join Beccles as area representatives in the play-offs.

In the Suffolk (Bowls England) Millennium Trophy Bungay hosted the highly-fancied Ipswich-based club Marlborough with the result to be decided by the first team to win three of the five rinks.

Bungay's Richard Allen put one on the board for Bungay as he convincingly won his two-wood singles.

After a marathon 24 ends and a brave fightback by Bungay captain Roger Bullen, Marlborough levelled the match by wining the four-wood singles 21-20.

Despite dropping a five on the 14th of 18 ends the three wood triples of Dominic Belisario, Derek Hinsley and David Sheppard held on to win by nine shots, before Marlborough again levelled the match by winning the pairs against Reg Brinded and Jack Newnham.

All eyes were now on the fours rink as Peter Rix, Richard Tuthill, David Feavyour and Jim Reid came under increasing pressure to keep their lead due to excellent bowling by the opposition to a short length jack.

Just three shots up overall and one down on the end Richard Tuthill, playing at number three, rolled the jack and his wood into the ditch to lay two shots which were not disturbed for the rest of the end.

With the final wood of the last end the Marlborough skip moved the jack back to gain a four, which was just one short of forcing an extra end.

Bungay therefore go through to the county semi-finals where they will meet Halesworth or West Row on September 12.
