THIS hockey game was practically a repeat of the previous week.

The stalwart Beccles players had to contend with yet another game with a squad of only nine. Thankfully, this week the opposition was prepared to lend them two players to even up the numbers, only for yet another Beccles player having to retire from the game with an aggravated injury, just before half-time.

Broadland, who fielded a mix of first and second team players, were a well-organised side, and with a strong forward line, the defence did exceptionally well in difficult circumstances.

Lorraine Greenwood was kept very busy, having to pull off many saves as she flung herself into the job, playing an integral part in the game.

Beccles were fortunate to have young Ella Crouch make her debut for the club and she adapted to her different roles with great maturity and calmness. At half-time the hosts were only leading 3-0.

However, with the loss of a defender, and the more experienced opposition, Beccles were soon 7-0 down. However, Beccles began their fightback with the first of three goals from Annette Freeman 12 minutes into the second half.

Undeterred, they battled away with captain Max Gibbs putting in a solid performance, ably assisted by Brenda Thompson. Heather Brand took many positional roles and battled continuously well throughout the game, giving vital support to both defence and forwards.

Freeman's hard work and skill at running at the defence was rewarded with two further goals, as she claimed her hat-trick four minutes before full time.

This was yet another determined but frustrating display by the Beccles players, of enduring yet another large defeat because it is difficult for a “one team” club to survive when each week several players are not available.

This week Beccles have their first league game at Hobart High School, 10.30am start.

Max Gibbs would be very pleased to hear from anyone interested in playing this season - call 07534 959699.
