BARSHAM lifted the Bungay Charity Cup at the Maltings Meadow Ditchingham on Friday night, a fitting celebration for their 60th anniversary year.

In one of the best finals for some years they took an early lead which they held till midway through the second half.

Then Spexhall struck two goals in two minutes and it looked as if they would go on to take the 85-year-old trophy. But Barsham equalised with five minutes left.

There were no more goals in extra time, and in the penalty shoot-out Spexhall took a 3-1 lead, with Barsham missing their second kick. Then Spexhall missed two and Barsham converted their final two.

They received the trophy from Paul Dossett, whose company PDQ Digital Media Solutions of Bungay were main sponsors this year. Paul is also a veteran of the successful Bungay Town team of the 1970s-80s, which he captained for several seasons.

He also presented the Harry Webster Memorial Shield to runners-up Spexhall, and plaques to both teams and the match officials, who gave their services free for the final and semi-finals - Gary High, Ivan Powell and Richard Bullen.

Terry Reeve, president of the charity cup committee presented a cheque for £2,599 to All Hallows Hospital at Ditchingham, which will provide 12 pagers for staff and a syringe driver for patients.

It was received by the hospital chief executive officer Clair Deamer and matron Janet Dunning, who showed examples of both pieces of equipment and said they would be of huge benefit to staff and patients.

This year's competition raised between £500-£600 and an auction of the match ball brought in £35.

The committee welcomes inquiries from those seeking grants for equipment or other items for charities or good local causes. Ring secretary Albert Taylor on 01986 893242.
