Beccles bowlers retain trophy

At Mid Suffolk on Sunday the Beccles A mixed team defeated Sudbury for the second year running to win the final of the Mixed County Bowls League.

Beccles were always in the lead, and with Mark Cole's rink racing into a 15-0 lead after five ends the pressure was on the other Sudbury rinks to cancel out that deficit.

Beccles were always in the lead, and with Mark Cole's rink racing into a 15-0 lead after five ends the pressure was on the other Sudbury rinks to cancel out that deficit.

By the halfway stage Beccles were 15 shots in front and the margin continued to grow with the final score being 90-57.

Rink scores: J Webster, P Mulcairn, J Knights and M Cole 33, G Rowlands 12; D Woodhouse, M Rayner, B Harber and S Cook 19, D Brinkley 14; M Wright, L Clarke, R Denny and J Catchpole 24, A Phillips 12; M Moore, J Plant, G Catchpole and M Todd 14, M Grimwood 19.

Next week will see the start of the club semi-finals with a full evening programme on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The semi-finals will be concluded over the weekend of April 17 and 18.
