For the first time in the club's history a girls' rugby team took to the field in Beccles colours, losing to Eastern Counties 32-15.

Their opponents were a representative team made up of players from several clubs in the Eastern Counties.

In an exciting game played in front of a good crowd, Beccles had early dominance.

Led by captain, Zanna Yallop, Beccles opened the scoring inside the first five minutes with a try from Ruby Gordon.

Eastern Counties responded with a try of their own, and then Ruby broke through again to score her second try.

Beccles established dominance in the scrum with the front row of Zanna, Georgina Carpenter and Laura Ash putting early pressure on the opposition front three.

Scrum-half Ceri Masters worked well off the back of the scrum feeding fly-half Jess Flynn, allowing the Beccles backs Sharron Catfield and Ella Beaden to move the ball.

The backs were well supported by barging runs from loose forward Sophie Blades. Beccles' final score came from a great run by Jess to score a well deserved try.

The game remained tight until late in the second half when the Eastern Counties players' experience told.

Despite pressure from the Beccles girls, they were able to match three unanswered tries, mainly from break out moves deep in their own half.

This was an excellent performance from Beccles who showed that, despite playing together for only a short time, they can hold their own against a team containing players at county level.

The Beccles girls take to the field again next week at Diss and have several more fixtures to look forward to.
