BECCLES played their first home pre-season friendly on Tuesday evening and came up against a determined opposition in the shape of Gorleston Reserves.

The starting line-up had a more familiar look about it with last season's top scorer Alan Remblance joined in attack by Andy woods and Alex Holmes.

Kevin Waterman and Craig Peters were joined in midfield by new signing Paul Heaney.

At the back captain Sam Barham's partner was new signing Tom Roberts, with Martin Myhill and Alex Greenacres as full back and Danny Cable in goal.

Beccles attacked at will and Andy Woods had the first chance but delayed his shot when well placed.

Alan Remblance was also looking dangerous and when Craig Peters played the ball through he expertly positioned himself between two defenders, picked up the ball and as the keeper advanced clipped his shot over him into the net.

Beccles had the upper hand for the rest of the half without ever looking like adding to their lead.

At half-time manager Mick Broxup introduced six substitutes but the pattern of play continued.

Matt Robbins, a late arrival due to work commitments, curled a free-kick into the box for another signing, Mark Howard, to profit from a slip from the goalkeeper and side-foot his first Beccles home goal.

It was all Beccles now and in particular Alex Holmes was having a fine match wide. He was terrorising the full-back with his pace and accurate crossing and it was from one such cross that Alan Ramblance added his second and Beccles' third goal.

Keeper Danny Cable was also called on later in the game to bring off a couple of smart saves.

Not to be outdone, the Gorleston keeper also dived full-length to keep out a screamer from Paul Heaney before coming off his line to block a Robbins' shot following a mazy dribble.

All in all a good first home workout for the squad, with some notable absentees, with Neil McMorran, Chris Mayhew and Nick Day away on holiday; Lee Shaw, Antony Martin working and Andy Wigg easing himself back in following an injury. It shows this season's squad could have real strength in depth.

The action finally gets under way for real next week with a Norwich City XI contesting the Jack Constance Cup on Monday, August 17 at 6.30pm.

The following Wednesday, August 19, the Reserves play their first fixture against Loddon Reserves (kick-off 6.30pm).

The following evening the first team start their league campaign with an away game at Sprowston Athletic (kick-off 6.30pm).
