BECCLES could not repeat their previous week's excellent performance, but were happy to come away with all three points from this Martin & Acock League Division One game.

Both sides were fairly even throughout with the play continually switching from end to end. In the first half the young UEA team were quicker to the ball and generally played more short, accurate passes compared to the long-ball passes of the Beccles players.

However, Beccles took an early lead following Carol Maycock's pass into the D to Annette Freeman, whose first-time connection sent the ball through the defence into the goal after seven minutes.

UEA continued to attack in numbers, making it difficult for the defence to track each player, but with lots of determination and grit they managed to keep a clean sheet up to half-time.

Both teams created many scoring opportunities but Beccles kept getting stopped at the last hurdle.

Second half Beccles played a lot better and increased their lead after just five minutes.

Captain Max Gibbs stepped up from defence to receive the ball from a penalty corner. She struck the ball hard on target and it hit the stick of the defender standing just in front of the goal-line and flew high into the back of the net.

UEA continued to plague the defence at every opportunity, and Lorraine Calver, Laura Cook, Heather Brand and Max Gibbs kept a clean sheet until five minutes from full time.

UEA deservedly pulled one back after they were awarded a penalty corner.

This week Beccles are at home to Lowestoft Railway 10.30am start.

Training continues on Wednesday, October 21, new players welcome, contact Max on 07534 959699 for more details.
