Beccles RFC are extending an invitation to local women to tkae part in a free rugby taster event.

Developed by England Rugby, the Meet Your Inner Warrior campaign is aimed at women and girls to encourage greater female participation in contact rugby across the country.

More than 150 Warrior Camps are taking place at rugby clubs across England, with the hope of attracting over 1,000 players to the sport — sports kit and trainers will be the only equipment needed.

Beccles will be holding their event at their Beef Meadow home on Sunday from 10am to 1pm, with players of all abilities welcome — free refreshments and free entry into a raffle to win a beauty voucher will be on offer.

Co-ordinator Carrie Ward is hoping that Beccles’ Warrior Camp will inspire newcomers of all ages to fall in love with rugby.

“We’ve probably got around 25 to 30 girls at the club but we’d always like to get more involved, particularly the younger girls,” said Ward.

“Our community coach Stewart Cameron will be running the session and we’ll be doing a little bit of fitness work, and there’ll be a chance for some game play as well.

“We want to show that we’re a friendly club and it’s about the social side of things — we do things like going to watch Ladies Premiership matches.

“We’ve got a girl, May Harvey, who has been selected for the England U18 touch team and another girl called Jazmin Wones is doing her RFU coaching development through the club, so we support all kinds of development.”

The first round of Inner Warrior camps in January saw more than 1,500 women and girls enjoy their first taste of rugby, many of whom have continued their participation within the sport.

And as the RFU look to further expand the number of females involved in the sport, the continued success of the Inner Warrior campaign is a top priority.

England Women’s player Sarah McKenna said: “The camps are perfect for those keen to get outdoors, keep fit and make friends. I’ve gained so much from rugby, both on and off the pitch, and would challenge everyone to step out of their comfort zone.”
