Following a promising first season, the girls of Beccles Rugby Club will go into the coming season with new confidence.

The club currently has a core group of ten regular team members, and is hoping to build on these numbers using the success of the England Ladies' team who defended their Six Nations Grand Slam for the third successive season and are currently ranked number two in the world as an example of what can be achieved by women in rugby.

Coach Alan Carpenter said: “All my players have good basic rugby skills and show a natural talent for the game, we put them out for their first ever match against county level players and nearly pulled off a surprise result.

“We have a new backs coach and also the chance to take part in a tournament at Dorchester Rugby Club this April, so this season should be really interesting.

“I believe the key for the future development of the team is the ladies of Beccles getting behind their club, we have set this up to give women of all ages the opportunity to take part in a team sport which is a great form of exercise and has an excellent social aspect.

“The current players are all U18's but we do have some girls coming through the club's minis section and they will join us when they reach the U13 level, but I hope that we can bring more mature players to the club so we can get a senior squad going as well as the juniors.”

He added: “What I would like is for Mums to feel that they can come down to the club, bring their daughter, and then pull on their own boots and join in just as we have had fathers and sons playing in the men's squad. The great thing about our game is that it is an inclusive sport, and can be enjoyed at whatever level it is played.”

Beccles Rugby Club is looking for both players of all ages and ladies who are interested in taking on coaching, refereeing or support roles in the women's section of the club.

If you are interested in playing or helping out, or just want to be a part of women's sport at this exciting time contact Alan Carpenter on 01379 668402.
