Beccles Town welcomed Wroxham Reserves for the last league game of 2018 on College Meadow and suffered a disappointing defeat on a day when the weather ruined the game as a spectacle.

On a bitterly cold day Beccles started into the wind and looked uncomfortable, with passes going astray, but on five minutes Hurren had a chance but stabbed wide from a cross by Bailey.

On 18 minutes Heaney won a ball in midfield and fed Hunt for a run down the right but his cross was volleyed over. Three minutes later Wroxham went ahead when a good run down the left saw Metcalf free in the box and his first time shot beat Cable from close in. Minutes later a similar move brought a fabulous point blank save from Cable.

On 24 minutes Shaw stumbled and fell while chasing a Wroxham striker who despite being one on one with Cable shot wide and then Heaney suffered an ankle injury in a clash in midfield and was replaced by Grimmer.

Cable was again the saviour stopping a point blank volley from a right wing cross while at the other end Bailey won a ball in midfield and fed Clark but the final shot was wide.

The second half started much as the first had ended with controlled football being almost impossible. On 55 minutes a corner by Bailey was headed by Lovelock on target but the wind took it just over the bar. Two minutes later a good move by Beccles saw Brown feed Hurren who’s hard hit cross was volleyed just wide by Hunt.

On 62 minutes Bailey was again in a good position but his shot was diverted behind. Hurren then went off to be replaced by Bee.

A good Beccles attack down the left ended on the corner of the Wroxham box when Bailey was brought down and he took the free-kick but it was straight at the Wroxham keeper and seconds later he could only hit the side netting from a good pass by Clark.

For five minutes Beccles laid siege to the Wroxham goal but in spite of several chances no one could get a decent shot with either bad bounces or the strengthening wind preventing any sort

of good play.

On 80 minutes Hurren was sent back on, replacing Hunt, with Beccles going three at the back to try for that equaliser, but despite more pressure, with only seconds on the clock a stranded Beccles defence was caught out with a snap shot from Wroxham’s Cooper that beat Cable at full stretch.

Beccles Town: (4-3-3): Cable, Hunt, Lovelock, Shaw, Staines, Brown, Heaney, Bailey, Hurrren, Clark and Bishop. Subs: Grimmer, Bee, Francis.

The Reserves had no game.
