ANOTHER encouraging performance at the Maltings Meadow on Saturday failed to bring Bungay, who have no game tomorrow, the reward they deserved in terms of Anglian Combination Division One points.

All the goals came in the first half, with Bungay breaking the deadlock.

The home side dominated after the interval, with the Rooks generally defending desperately for much of the time to hang on to their lead.

But an equaliser would not come and, for the third game in succession, Bungay were left feeling hard done by after odd-goal defeats, though the visitors deserve credit for defending their lead well.

The striking pair of Dan Andrews and Ash Ling gave them plenty to think about and both got on the score sheet, while on the left Dan Shimmon had probably his best game for the first team and Dan
Wilby, who has returned to the club, brought quality to the midfield on his first game back.

The Black Dogs took the lead after 10 minutes as Ling moved on to a good ball over the top and nicked it over the keeper as he advanced. Soon after the same player was unlucky not to increase the lead with an overhead kick that beat the keeper and rebounded off a post.

But Wymondham were level in the 16th minute as the home defence hesitated following a free-kick on the left and Tom Seaman took advantage to beat Gary Foyster from six yards.

Bungay played some good football going forward, but went behind to a well taken goal in the 33rd minute, Rob Brown volleying into the top corner from 20 yards when a cross was headed clear.

And two minutes later he made it 3-1, though there was a touch of fortune this time as his free-kick from out on the right was curled into the far top corner by the strong breeze with Foyster struggling to get back.

Ling tested the keeper with one effort as the Black Dogs fought back and six minutes from the interval Shimmon found Andrews with a fine ball and he took it round the keeper and found the roof of the net from an angle for his eighth goal of the season.

Foyster grabbed the ball at the feet of a Wymondham forward in the first minute of the second half but after that it was mainly Bungay on the offensive.

Andrews curled a shot against the outside of the far post and then cut into the box from the right only to be robbed by a defender as he was about to shoot, and from a Shimmon free-kick Ling kneed an effort over the bar when the ball unexpectedly fell to him.

Kevin Riches set up Andrews for another looping shot that went just wide and the striker was too high with another effort.

He was seeking good positions and on another occasion when he did beat the keeper a defender was on hand to clear.

Wymondham did have one short spell of ascendancy in which a shot hit the outside of a post and Foyster had to make a good block to keep out another strike.

In the final minute a Riches free-kick caused problems for Wymondham but the ball was booted clear close to the line.

Bungay: G Foyster, S Batt, S Whiteman, K Riches, D Lowe, J Youngman (A Lowe), D Wilby, T Cole, D Shimmon (S Olley), D Andrews, A Ling.

Bungay U18s entertain Diss U18s on Thursday (7.45pm).
