Beccles Rowing Club celebrated Boat Race Day in style with its own version of the Oxford Versus Cambridge competition.

Nearly the entire club turned out for a fabulous day of fun, games, burgers and racing.

It was the brainchild of new captain Phil and the club was randomly split into two halves, with one side nominated Cambridge and the other Oxford, naturally, and sent out to do battle.

Events were held on the beautiful stretch of river in front of the club in such illustrious and gruelling events as the 'tennis ball relay', the 'most 360 degree spins in a plastic training boat' and 'least strokes to complete the course' challenge.

Even more competitive action was seen in the jostling for space and sausages on the barbecue and the race to the beer.

Captain Phil said: “This is a fundamental part of what Beccles Rowing Club is now about. Getting the whole club to interact together, enjoy themselves and develop the kind of strong bonds that will drive us through gruelling winter training and sunny successful summer regattas alike.

“The age range was incredible, with members from eight to eighty, girls and boys, seniors and Juniors, high-level rowers to beginners, all mixing together and sharing a brilliant day's fun. The success of this event has inspired us to have many more like it, and everybody is welcome!”

Those interested in coming to one of the social events, or one of the Beccles Rowing Club Induction Programmes, or who are keen to help the club in any way, are encouraged to contact captain Phil Marler via www.becclesrowingclub.co.uk
