Blustery conditions and showers did not deter 24 triples from competing at Bungay Bowls Club for the President's Shield which was sponsored for the first time by Jacobs Kitchens and Bedrooms of Bungay.

With just the third and final round of matches to play, three triples remained unbeaten in the first qualifying group and there was one key match. That was the 2005 winners skipped by Blundeston's Peter Hurren who was playing with club members Kim Dyer and Melanie Cole, against Pat Skelly (Waveney) George Howes (Mettingham) and Peter Nunn (Bungay). Both triples had won their opening two matches. Despite taking an early 4-1 lead Pat's triple then lost 15 shots in just four ends before splitting eight shots over the final four ends to lose 20-8 and putting Peter's triple in prime position for a finals spot.

Also vying for a finals spot was the remaining unbeaten triple of Alan Buck (Oulton Broad), Hazel Catlin (Wrentham) and Roger Clarke (Sole Bay). After being 6-1 downs after four ends Alan's triple took five of the remaining six ends to win 14-7. Both unbeaten triples had a shot difference of 37 but Peter's triple had scored just two more shots than Alan's so Peter headed for the grand final while Alan played off for third place.

Only two triples had won both their opening games in the second qualifying group with the all Bungay triple of Dominic Belisario, Barbara Wortley and Jack Powley holding a six-shot lead of the Trimley triple of Brian Pryke, Valerie Pryke and Paul Hazelwood. However, the wheels came off both carts as Dominic's triple lost 14-4 to Peter Rix (Bungay), David Simplkin (Bungay) and Terry Betts (Rookery) while Brian's triple lost 14-6.

This meant that half of the 12 teams were separated by shot difference in the group. At the crucial stage the group was headed by the 2008 runners-up from Costessey Crown skipped Steve Tayt with George Webster and Kathy Arthur by just three shots from the Peter Rix triple.

In the third place final, except for the first end, Peter Rix's triple were never behind and beat Alan Buck's triple 12-6.

In the grand final Peter Hurren's triple scored nine shots in the first three ends to put the pressure firmly on to Steve Tayt's team. Despite trying they were never able to find a way back into the match so they had to settle for the runners-up position for the second consecutive year.

All the finalist were presented with their prizes by the sponsors Allen and Janet Jacobs. Club chairman Dominic Belisario thanked all those members who had helped in staging the event, especially Ian and Judy Gosling and those members who had helped with setting up the green. He also thanked Allen and Janet for their sponsorship.

Despite only winning one rink at Halesworth Bungay Bowls Club progressed to the Suffolk EBF Senior Cup Area A semi-finals by just four shots thanks to a 27-5 win by Dominic Belisario, Dererk Hinsley and Peter Nunn.

In the semi-finals only one rink won again but it was not enough to beat Wrentham at Bungay who now go through to the final.

In the Suffolk (Bowls England) Norton Cup both the Bungay home and away rinks had comfortable victories to proceed to the next round at the expense of Woodbridge.
