Sheringham 0 Bungay Town 3

The Black Dogs turned in probably their best performance of the season to claim a convincing win over third-placed Sheringham on Saturday and maintain second place in the Anglian Combination Division One.

The three goals came in an 11-minute spell toward the end of the first half and all were well worked and well taken to see Bungay complete a double over opponents they beat 5-4 at home.

Bungay played some great football from the start, taking the game to Sheringham and causing the defence considerable problems. Alex Perrin got to the by-line on one occasion but his pull back was blocked before it reached the waiting Dom Mirner.

But in the 26th minute Perrin again got to the by-line and this time his pull-back found John Riches on the edge of the area, and he controlled the ball and stroked it low into the corner of the net.

Immediately Rob Howes made a great save from a fierce close-range shot to keep his side ahead and Sam Olley completed the clearance.

In the 30th minute it was 2-0 as a move involving John Riches and Perrin set up Luke Spear, who took it on to calmly beat the keeper just inside the post.

Mirner put a long-range effort over the bar before, in the 37th minute, Olley retrieved Mirner’s free kick when it cleared everyone and when he put it back in the danger area Shaun Whiteman controlled it and stabbed a low shot past the static keeper.

As Bungay continued to dominate Kevin Riches put Perrin clear down the right but his finish was well off target.

Early in the second half Perrin had a chance, but he shot weakly instead of passing. At the other end Howes did well to catch a long cross under pressure. Whiteman headed a Mirner cross wide from a good position in the 66th minute, and from a Mirner corner J Riches brought a good save from the home keeper with a well-struck volley.

As Sheringham tried to make a last effort they put a header wide, Howes made a good save to turn a diverted shot round the post and then a volley following a corner just cleared the bar. Spear almost made his way through for Bungay but the keeper grabbed the ball to snuff out the intended shot.

Bungay: Howes, Causton, Hunting, Whiteman, McFadden, Olley, J Riches, K Riches, Spear, Perrin (Bone), Mirner.

Tomorrow Bungay entertain Bradenham Wanderers at 2.30pm.
