Bungay Black Dog Running Club junior members have been chalking up a string of successes in this winter’s cross country season.

Peter Lowther represented Sir John Leman School in the second round of Suffolk Schools Cross Country, finishing 33rd in a strong field.

Eight BBDRC juniors represented their schools in the first round of Norfolk Schools Cross Country Championships at Wymondham College. Their results included: Under-13 Girls - Tess Andrews 1, Under 13 Boys - Harry Smith 1, Gregg Taylor (second claim) 17, Under 15 Girls - Holly Bunn (second claim) 2, Under 15 Boys - Joseph Smith 1, Ruben Andrews 3, Under 17 Girls - Ellen Lockhart 4, Under 17 Boys - Harry Allcock 2.

Freddie Cox-Hartigan represented his school at the Central Norwich Area, coming sixth in the Under-13 old boys race.

Eight juniors competed in the Suffolk Winter Cross Country League at Stowmarket. The results were: Under 17 Boys - Harry Allcock 2, Under 15 Boys - Joseph Smith 3, Under 15 Boys - Ruben Andrews 7, Under 15 Girls - Ellen Lockhart 4, Under 13 Girls - Tess Andrews 3, Under 13 Boys - Freddie Cox-Hartigan 11, Under 11 Fun Race - Joshua Woodley 5.

Back at the club, each year the junior coaches make recommendations to the club captains and chairman for Jim Jervis Scholarships, awarded in the name of one of the club’s founders and judged on a number of criteria.

The prizes are to be used to benefit and promote the athlete’s running. The 2017 winners, announced last week, are: 14 years and under (boys) - Peter Lowther, Over 14 - Harry Alcock, 14 years and under (girls) - Tess Andrews.

Among club seniors, Chris Hall has been awarded a place on the GB Team to compete at the European Standard Distance Triathlon Age Group Championships to be held in Tartu, Estonia in July. A superb performance at the Grafham Water Triathlon in August last year secured the place by a matter of just nine seconds in over two hours of racing. His father-in-law Roly Shaw had also qualified earlier.

The latest Gorleston Park run on Saturday was won by Billy Heseltine of Bloodhill Runners in a time a 17 minutes and 17 seconds. Darren Honour (Bungay Black Dog) was fourth in 18.02.
