Cloudy skies greeted 16 triples at Bungay Bowls Club to compete for the Wightman of Bungay President’s Shield Triples.
In the first qualifying group the triple of Alan Buck (Oulton Broad), brother Terry (Bungay) and Richard Tuthill (Bungay) held a 17-shot lead over the Lowestoft Railway triple of Eddie Dresser, Mick and Margaret, Beck with both having won their opening two matches.
Another Lowestoft Railway triple of Bernie Earls, Terry and Glenis Harvey were third with a win and a draw. In their last match Terry’s triple beat Mick’s triple to leap to the top of the group as Alan’s triple lost their last game, but held onto second in group by 10 shots from Mick’s triple.
In the second qualifying group two triples won their opening matches. The Diss trio of Ian Dunnett, David Harrison and Dave Catchpole led the Costessey Crown trio of Steve Tayt, Ray and Jackie Lutkin by five shots.
Meanwhile Steve Tayt won his final match by a single shot on the last end, Ian’s triple lost by one shot on their last end ,thus losing their place in the grand final to Steve, but they held on by 13 shots for a place in the third place final.
In the third place final Alan Buck’s triple scored 12 shots in the first five ends without reply by Ian Dunnett. Despite scoring on four of the last five ends, Ian’s team could only manage seven shots and thus gave Alan third place with a score of 13-7.
Terry Harvey’s triple scored six shots in the first three ends of the grand final, only to drop a five to Tayt’s triple on end four.
Terry recovered those shots on the next two ends to lead 11-5. With one end to play Terry led Steve 12-8. On the last end and holding three, Steve’s skip Ray needed a delicate touch on one of the short woods to force the draw, but narrowly missed with his last wood to give Terry’s triple their first Bungay tournament win by 12-11.
Lynn Turner, representing Wightman’s presented the prizes to the finalists after Dominic Belisario, the tournament organiser for the day, thanked all those who helped with the raffle, refreshments and setting up the green.
