Bungay's Alliance Division Four side went through to the second round of the Carter Cup after a nail-biting victory over Division One side and local rivals Hales on Sunday by just two wickets.

Following the washout on Saturday, it was great credit to the groundsman Paul Forder at Bungay that the game even took place as the heavy previous day's rain delayed play by an hour.

Bungay captain David Fuller invited Hales to bat first in a game reduced to 40 overs per side. Will Lewis started with the new ball and removed the Hales captain Steve Rowe fourth ball. Hales found themselves in trouble at the other end as G Mattocks removed C Anderson lbw for nought to leave them 5 for 2.

D Andersen and A Jones continued to play shots and ride their luck as the score moved on to 28 before Lewis had Jones caught behind.

Beaumont lasted just two balls before he too was dismissed by Lewis, and Andersen's luck finally ran out and he lobbed a catch to cover off Mattocks.

Hales were in deep trouble at 47 for 5.

M Elden entered the attack with D Fuller, and although the Hales batsmen continued to frustrate the Bungay bowlers, wickets continued to fall and Hales were bowled out inside 25 overs for just 113.

With a modest target to chase, Bungay saw W Lewis bowled first ball by a fired-up R Andersen. Ramm joined York who dominated the Hales attack early on, taking 19 off the second over. York had scored 29 out of the 35 total when he was bowled by Andersen, and when Ramm was caught for six, Bungay were in trouble at 42 for 3.

The Bungay captain and J Goodfellow started to rebuild, both looking comfortable against some tight bowling from the Hales premium four bowlers. They had taken the game almost home with a 50-run partnership when Goodfellow was bowled by Rowe for 22.

At 91 for 4 Elden joined Fuller but only succeeded in running his captain out, then ran himself out due to some terrific fielding at 105 for 6.

Hales started to sense a come-back and soon removed G Mattocks for one, and when D Flatt was adjudged lbw for nought, Bungay were still eight runs away with two wickets remaining.

With the captain unable to look, Bungay were handed a huge slice of luck when part-time bowler D Andersen fired the ball down the leg side to gift Bungay five wides, and with just three required it was left to D Mowday to strike the winning runs.

After the game, captain Fuller said: “It was a great game and one we deserved to win. Hales are a good side, as proved by their Division One status, and everyone at the club is delighted that we progress to the next round.”

When asked who Bungay would like to face he said: “My brother Chris has gone to play for Great Witchingham this year so I would have liked to get them, but any of the EAPL team would be good!”
