Bungay coped well with the wind on Saturday to inflict on Norwich St Johns only their fifth defeat of the season in the Anglian Combination Division Two, winning 1-0.

A single goal mid-way through the second half was enough to secure the points, making it seven from three games and virtually ensuring their safety in the division.

It was a much better performance than in the midweek draw against Aylsham, with Bungay keeping their shape and moving the ball about well at times. The defence, again well marshalled by Craig Hunting and with full-backs Tom Daniels and Mark Harvey in fine form, rarely gave St Johns a clear chance, though Jimmy Blight made a couple of impressive saves towards the end.

It was a lively game throughout, with Craig Taylor getting in the first direct strike for Bungay, his effort moving awkwardly in the wind and forcing the keeper to clasp it at the second attempt.

Tom Amiss put in a good run down the right but his low effort went across goal and out. St Johns drove one shot narrowly wide when given space, but when Bungay won a corner, the result of a good move involving Harvey and Joe MacFarlane, Taylor headed the flag kick just too high.

James Youngman's determination won the ball by the corner flag to beat his marker and set up a shooting chance for Taylor, but the midfielder mis-hit his shot.

MacFarlane went close with a shot on the turn and Amiss was wide with a similar effort after good work from Kevin Talbot, who soon after had to go off following lengthy treatment to a leg injury, Ash Ling replacing him.

Right on half-time the visitors broke clear and Bligh made a great save with his outstretched leg to divert the shot just wide.

In the second half Paul Hunter tried a snap shot which the keeper took well as the Black Dogs continued to pose problems for the visitors' defence, though St Johns were dangerous on the break and Bligh moved quickly to grab one snap shot.

The breakthrough came on 70 minutes when a MacFarlane corner was cleared to Hunter, and he re-acted quickly to volley home from eight yards.

Straight from the restart the visitors broke clear and Bligh again did well to deflect a effort wide. When they won a corner, the keeper made a great reflex save from a close-range header to turn it over the bar.

But Bungay finished well and before the end Amiss was inches away from connecting with a low ball across the six-yard box from Taylor.

Tomorrow, Bungay visit Poringland Wanderers (2.30pm).
