Bungay in charge for half-time

TWO first-half goals were enough to extend Bungay's unbeaten run to five games at the Maltings Meadow on Saturday.

The side, now a good blend of youth and experience - there were six teenagers in the squad - turned in a good all-round performance, and were well worth the three Anglian Combination Division One points.

Paul Bullen had his best game to date in midfield where Neil Renaut and Billy Davies also impressed.

After an opening period in which there was little between the sides and few goalmouth incidents, the Black Dogs took the lead on 21 minutes as Bullen played in a long free-kick that found Dan Lowe at the far post.

He headed down, the ball finding its way into the net as a defender made a hash of an attempted clearance.

Corton had a good chance soon after but a forward failed to control the ball in front of goal. Then a good break by Ainsley Baynes found Bullen and his low cross set up Shane Ward who was well placed, but his shot was blocked.

Bungay survived two corners and broke quickly, with Ward neatly working an opening for himself only to fire wide from the edge of the area. He was again narrowly off target.

But the threatened second goal came four minutes before half-time as Renaut played the ball into the six-yard box following Bullen's corner and Davies moved in at the far post to prod home.

Early second half Ward grazed a post with a free-kick following a foul on Bullen. Soon after home keeper Ian Barber was up to his only serious test of the game as he made a great reflex save from a close-range header.

Bungay continued to have the better of things and a great long cross from Mark Shipley picked out Baynes, whose diving header was well saved low down by the keeper.

With five minutes left Corton should have pulled one back but a forward fired wide with only Barber to beat.

Tomorrow, Bungay visit Horsford United. The Reserves are at home to Mattishall Reserves (2.30).
