Waveney 1 Bungay Town 1

An 85th-minute goal robbed Bungay of a win against their closest rivals for promotion from Division Two of the Anglian Combination on Saturday.

The Black Dogs took an early lead and defended it well. The result maintained their unbeaten away record and kept them eight points clear of Waveney at the top of the table with five games left.

The Black Dogs took the lead in the eighth minute. Aiden Lowe chased a ball to the byline and cut it back for Joe McFarlane to slide it just inside the far post from 12 yards.

Soon after Dom Mirner went close before McFarlane was upended on a solo run, but Craig Hunting’s free-kick was off target. As Waveney tried to take advantage of the wind Howes did well to turn a swirling cross over in the 64th minute. A fine tackle from Whiteman cut out more danger, but in the 85th minute Waveney equalised as an inswinging corner caused problems and a forward got a touch to nudge the ball home. Bungay almost won it in the last minute as John Riches turned to fire in a shot that former Bungay keeper Matt Gooch managed to turn over. Tomorrow Bungay entertain Marlingford in Division Two at 2.30pm.
