Bungay Town 1 Yelverton 1: Black Dogs draw again - but it’s an improved performance

The Black Dogs shared the points on Saturday for the third time in four games in an entertaining game against Yelverton.
It was their fifth game in a row without a win, but this was a much better performance than the one at Thetford Rovers the previous week. They had chances to win it, but a draw was probably a fair result.
In front of a large crowd in autumn sunshine Bungay gave a debut to another goalkeeper, Lewis Riches from Diss. The game also marked veteran defender Craig Hunting’s 550 appearance.
The visitors put an early header wide and for Bungay Ash Canham broke clear but the keeper managed to grab the ball at the second attempt before Darrell Wigger was inches short of meeting Canham’s ball into the area.
The visitors had a chance in the 22nd minute but put an angled effort wide and it was the Black Dogs who went in ahead with a goal in the 35th minute. Dom Mirner headed a ball forward, Canham moved it into Wigger’s path and he deftly lobbed the keeper as he came off his line.
But Yelverton were back on level terms in the 51st minute as Tom Pitchell got away down the left and his angled drive nestled into the far corner. Soon after Riches made a great save, holding a point blank volley at his near post. For Bungay Tom Hunter won a duel down the left and his angled shot just missed the far post.
As both sides attacked in turn Jamie Weston cleared a Yelverton effort off the line with John Riches completing the clearance and at the other end Josh Knights saw an effort blocked by the keeper. Then Shaun Flint had a great chance as he robbed the keeper as he was about to grab the ball, only to delay his shot and the chance was lost.
Bungay went close again when Canham found Hunter with a fine ball but Mirner could only turn his low cross against the keeper and with 10 minutes left Mirner spooned another chance over.
In the final minute John Riches rifled in a fierce low free-kick which the keeper failed to hold, but as the ball reared up Flint headed it over from close range.
