Bungay Town moved into the second promotion spot in the Anglian Combination Division One with a 6-1 victory over Reepham Town on Saturday.
Four of of the goals came in the first half as for once the scoreline reflected the Black Dogs’ superiority, with captain Shaun Whiteman being the first into double figures.
It was he who put Bungay ahead after just two minutes as Ash Canham’s long throw caused problems. Dom Mirner had a shot blocked and Whiteman fired home the loose ball from inside the six-yard box.
Canham tried a first time volley from 25 yards which was off target, but Bungay made it 2-0 in the sixth minute as Canham won a free-kick on the edge of the area and John Riches drilled the kick low into the net for his eighth goal of the season.
The same player had a shot deflected for a corner later and Jamie Weston stabbed a shot straight at the keeper as Reepham were not allowed a look-in. The inevitable third goal came in the 25th minute as Whiteman headed his 10th of the season from Darrell Wigger’s corner.
Shortly after Wigger sent Tom Hunter away down the left and his low cross into the danger area was turned in by a defender with Mirner waiting to pounce.
Bungay made it 5-0 just two minutes into the second half as Canham curled a free-kick from the edge of the area inside the near post for his ninth of the season. But Reepham were more determined in the second half and Lewis Riches in the home goal had to grab the ball at the second attempt in one attack. Nevertheless 16-year-old Spencer Cawcutt, on his debut, put a header wide from Riches’ cross before, in the 62nd minute, Mirner made it 6-0 from a good Cawcutt lay-off, banging in a powerful shot from the right edge of the area. It was his ninth of the season.
Hunter headed another cross into the side-netting but keeper Riches had to make a reflex save to keep out a Reepham shot, before Hunter brought a fine save from the Reepham keeper with a tremendous 35-yard volley.
But with three minutes left the visitors grabbed a consolation as the ball bobbled about in the six-yard box before going into the net off a defender.
Team: L Riches, Weston (Mirner), Hunting, Whiteman, Daniels, Mirner (Wigger, J Riches), Solomon (Knights), J Riches (Solomon), Hunter, Canham (James), Wigger (Cawcutt).
Tomorrow Bungay entertain Attleborough Town (2.30pm) in their last home game until April.
Beccles Caxton maintained their promotion push in Division Three with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Hempnall at Caxton Meadow, Mark Horward’s early goal settling it. On Saturday they make the short trip to Earsham, who stayed sixth after losing 2-1 at Aylsham Reserves.
