Two first half goals were enough as Bungay Town beat visitors Attleborough Town 2-0 to make it five successive wins in the Anglian Combination Division One on Saturday.
They have now lost only once in their last 12 games to consolidate second place in the table with eight games to play.
They dominated the first half and were good value for their lead, but the visitors came back well in the second half have and gave the home defence some anxious moments.
In only the fifth minute Craig Hunting put a header from a corner against the post from Tom Hunter’s corner, and Shaun Whiteman struck the woodwork in the 11th minute with a header.
But in his 560th game Hunting had more luck from another Hunter corner — this time his firm header at the far post game the keeper no chance.
Dom Mirner had a shot blocked later from a good cross from Jamie Weston, and then a fine ball by Whiteman found Ash Canham down the left and his first time cross caused problems before the keeper just beat Mirner to the ball. And Mirner worked a good chance in the 30th minute only to put his shot narrowly wide.
Finally, he did get his 10th goal of the season in the 41st minute, curling a fine left foot shot into the top corner after Brannan Solomon’s shot had been blocked.
Early in the second half Mirner curled another effort narrowly wide, and Darrell Wigger had another chance after more good football, but fired straight at the keeper. Then Whiteman scooped a shot over the bar from close in when he should have hit the target.
Attleborough’s first shot of the game did not come until the 55th minute. It was deflected wide and led to a series of corners which Bungay defended with difficulty. Keeper Lewis Riches then took a powerful shot well, and shortly after Attleborough netted when the keeper dropped the ball, but the flag was up for offside.
Riches had to make another good save to turn away a shot as Attleborough put pressure on, with Bungay unable to put together the football they had shown in the first half. .
But the clean sheet remained intact and near the end substitute Spencer Cawcutt tested the Attleborough keeper with an angled shot.
