Sam Wooldridge was the hero for the Black Dogs on Saturday as he came off the bench to score two vital goals to turn the game round after Kirkley had taken a first half lead.

His two well-taken efforts paved the way for a crucial win, which means that if Bungay can win their final two games (both difficult away games) they will finish third in the Anglian Combination Division One – and there are likely to be three promotion positions this season.

Now unbeaten in 12 games in 2019, Bungay started well, and Jamie Weston almost got on to a cross into the box from Ash Canham, but the keeper just got there first. But they moved ahead in the 15th minute as Darrell Wigger’s free-kick caused panic and Canham got the final touch as the ball bobbled in off a post for his 11th goal of the season.

Kirkley went close with a shot that hit the bar following a cornerand then attacked down the right and when the ball was crossed to the left Ross King drove a fine first time shot inside the far post.

Six minutes later the Royals took the lead with a fine 25-yard shot from Gary Williams which found the top corner after a corner had been headed clear. For the rest of the half they were the better side as Bungay struggled for rhythm and only a good save from Lewis Riches prevented a third for Kirkley as he grabbed an intended lob from James Gill when the former Bungay player broke clear.

The home side gradually worked themselves back into the game after the break and Canham was unlucky to see his curling free-kick go narrowly wide.

Wooldridge came on for Solomon in the 60th minute and Wigger had a chance at the far post from Tom Hunter’s cross but could not direct his effort.

The equaliser came with 20 minutes left as Wooldridge was played in following a move down the right and stayed cool to beat the keeper.

And with three minutes left the vital goal came as a cross into the area caused Kirkley problems and Wooldridge took the chance to beat the keeper at his near post. The points were clinched in added time as Hunter beat the offside trap and took the ball on to beat the keeper.

Bungay Town: L Riches, J Weston, C Hunting, T Daniels, S Whiteman, D Wigger (R Cook), B Solomon (S Wooldridge), J Knights, T Hunter, J Riches, A Canham.

Tomorrow Bungay visit second placed Mundford (2.30pm). Then there is a big gap before the final game at Easton on May 3 (7.15pm).
