The strong wind was the real winner on Saturday as Bungay Town battled out their eighth draw of the Anglian Combination Division One season at Stalham, with the match ending 1-1.

Against the wind in the first half they defended well and went in level. But with the wind they were unable to make the advantage count and remain fifth in the table in a very close top six.

Good football was difficult but any there was came from Bungay, though the home side had the first real chance in the eighth minute, but a forward’s lob from a good position was carried over by the wind.

For Bungay John Riches drove in a free-kick that was cleared for a corner and the same player headed Tom Hunter’s flag-kick only to see it palmed away by the keeper.

But Stalham took the lead in the 23rd minute as a corner played low to the near post was turned in by Thomas Crabb.

In the 25th minute Darrell Wigger was brought down on the edge of the area but Riches drove the free-kick just wide. Whiteman found Dom Mirner with a fine ball to put him clear but his first touch was poor and the chance was gone.

But two minutes from the interval Bungay equalised as Wigger’s cross into the six-yard box was turned into his own net by a defender, with Brannan Solomon waiting to pounce.

Early in the second half Bungay created a chance as Wigger’s cross found the unmarked Solomon, who volleyed off target. From a Riches corner Whiteman’s header was cleared from under the bar while a 30-yard shot from Solomon dipped narrowly over. Ash Canham, on for Mirner, tried his luck with five minutes left but it as wide and Josh Knights was agonisingly close to a winner in added time with a curling shot which grazed the post.

Team: L Riches, J Weston (B Carter), C Hunting, R Daniels, S Whiteman, J Riches, J Knights, B Solomon, T Hunter, D Wigger, D Mirner (A Canham).

Bungay have two more key games in the next four days against teams above them in the table. They visit Aylsham tomorrow (2.30pm) and on Tuesday entertain UEA (7.30pm).
