Archant

A fine second half goal from Kevin Riches brought Bungay a deserved win at Walmer Road - and put them in good heart for a big derby clash.

As well as the wind the Black Dogs also had to overcome the handicap of playing with 10 men for 68 minutes after Sonny Artherton was sent off, but the result was rarely in doubt after another good performance.

They will now be looking to keep up the good work when they entertain Beccles in the Mummery Cup tomorrow (1.30pm).

Kicking against the wind in the first half, the visitors took the lead inside three minutes, as Josh Knights played a corner to the far post for Shaun Whiteman to head his sixth goal of the season. Soon after the keeper made a good save from John Riches after a good Bungay build-up.

But in the 22nd minute Artherton was given a straight red card for retaliation after being fouled.

Bungay continued to take the game to Kirkley and Tom Hunter got in a good cross to the far post for Sam Olley but he could not direct his header back across goal. But Kirkley equalised in the 43rd minute as a corner was cleared to the edge of the area where Brad Carroll controlled it and drilled a fine shot into the corner of the net.

The Black Dogs had further chances before regaining the lead in the 61st minute with a fine goal. Kevin Riches won the ball with a great tackle 30 yards out, spotted the keeper off his line and took one touch before beating him with a fine effort that nestled in the back of the net.

Later Knights worked his way into the penalty area and when the ball broke to Lewis Bilham his shot grazed the bar.

Carroll had the chance to equalise just before the end but Smith was equal to it as Bungay took three more valuable Anglian Combination Division One points.

Bungay Town: Smith, Olley (K Riches), Hunting, Cook, Whiteman, Hunter, Solomon (Bilham), J Riches, Knights (Clay), Mirner, Artherton.
