TWENTY-FOUR pairs com-peted for the Captain's Cup at Bungay Bowls Club on Father's Day.

It was sponsored by Bungay butcher John Groom via his Catering and Carriages concern.

In the first of two qualifying groups father and son pairing Bungay members Colin and Jack Powley won all their matches to reach the grand final.

Last year's runners-up George Howes (Mettingham) and Peter Nunn (Bungay) held the third-place final position prior to their last game but were soundly beaten 14-6 by Roger Clarke (Sole Bay) and Hazel Catling (Wrentham) to finish with a win and a draw.

After shot difference was taken into consideration the Costessey Crown duo of Ray Lutkin and Kath Arthur emerged in second, with a place in the third-place final, by 15 shots from Lowestoft Railway's John Ward and Russell Garrod.

Alan Chenery (Earl Soham) and Albert Wall (Yoxford) continued their winning ways with a comfortable 15-3 win.

After two matches the 2006 winners Roger Bullen (Bungay) and his sister Margaret Harman (Wroxham) were just one shot behind Alan and Albert and seem destined for a grand final place by scoring a seven and a four on the opening two ends against Trimley's Joe Campos and Ron Peck.

However, Roger and Margaret controlled the game to win 15-12 for a place in the third-place final.

The third non-losing pair of Bungay duo Jim Reid and David Sheppard, third in 2007, slumped to an 18-3 defeat to Blundeston's Peter Hurren (winner in 2007) and Ralph Kippen.

In the third-place final Margaret and Roger emerged winners.

The final featured one of the oldest players in the competition, Albert, leading against the youngest, Jack. Good conversion shots by Colin gave him and Jack a 5-2 lead before Alan replied to gain a four and two on the next two ends.

Albert's leading to a long jack gave his pair the advantage over the final two ends with Alan ditching the jack on the ninth end for shot. With Colin being unlucky with jack movement on the final end the Earl Soham/Yoxford pairing won the Captain's Cup by 10 shots to five.

Bungay chairman Dominic Belisario thanked all the competitors for their support, John Groom for lending his name to the day, Ian Gosling for organising the entries, Judy Gosling for the excellent refreshments and all the Bungay members who had helped.

Contrary to a previous report Roger Bullen and Derek Hinsley have not reached the pairs' quarter-finals. Playing with David Sheppard, they reached the county quarter-finals of the Bowls England Triples competition.

In the Custom Kitchens Cup, Bungay held onto a three-shot win at Sparrow's Nest thanks to a 14-shot win by the rink skipped by Roger Bullen, as it covered Dominic Belisario's 15-shot defeat.

Despite a late surge by the two Sparrow's Nests rinks at Bungay, the home rinks managed a four-shot win for the three-shot advantage.
