A blustery but warm south-westerly made sailors sweat at Beccles last Saturday and unfortunately resulted in a low turnout in some fleets.

The King George V Pennant handicap race had 11 boats to the line, and despite the efforts of Matt Deller in a Laser and the commodore's Enterprise who both crossed the line first, Nigel and Abbie Shipley in their Norfolk Herewego took the honours on corrected time.

The first Topper race was dominated by Katie Roll who capitalized on a great start in their small fleet of three boats. She was never troubled in the first race, although a capsize in front of Norfolk Beagle in race two saw her lucky to escape with just a torn sail.

An extra mark was inserted for the Optimist helms, Racheal Folkard winning the first race and Elena Edwards taking top spot in the second after a close battle with George Curtis.

Unusually, just two Ents were out for the Kerrich Cup which had Richard Deller and Saskia Baylis in Cuddles first over the line.

Five Norfolks provided on-lookers with a thrilling start and first beat up to the new bridge buoy were Rory Kelsey and Georgie Roll. But eventually team Shipley got past to take their second win of the day in Herewego.

Ollie Baylis continues to marvel in his Laser Di Di Mau as he literally planed to victory on the broad-reach downriver in the Will Judge Trophy race, keeping Matt Deller in Hellraiser 30 seconds behind to the line.

Kevin and Elena Edwards hauled Sharkie out of the park for the last handicap race, which was extended by a round - and it proved fruitful for them. They extended their lead over Matt Deller's Laser and the commodore's Ent to win convincingly by nearly half a minute.

Sunday's up-river races to Geldeston had a huge number of club boats on the start line near the newly re-opened swimming pool.

Seventeen dinghies keenly but slowly made their way up to the Locks Inn against the usual light airs. After lunch, and the Waveney ebbing, the sizeable fleet started for home.

But shortly after the OOD's whistle a mass pile-up ensued. Eventually the crews got spread out and got back to town late afternoon. Richard Deller and Saskia Baylis were again triumphant both ways in their Enterprise Cuddles.

Thanks went to the three rescue boat teams who ensured safe passage, and to OOD Kevin Edwards.
