HALES A won Greeny's six-a-side competition on Sunday in a sensational finish - fitting of the day - when Chris Ayre smashed a huge six off the last ball to see his side home.

HALES A won Greeny's six-a-side competition on Sunday in a sensational finish - fitting of the day - when Chris Ayre smashed a huge six off the last ball to see his side home.

In the group stages, a strong Kirkley side narrowly missed out after beating the eventual winners in their first match. Greeny's team beat Kirkley by a run but then lost to Hales A, leaving some lengthy calculations to see Kirkley eliminated.

In the other group, Hales won both games, with the Porters narrowly missing out to Kirkley A.

In the semi-finals Greeny's team beat Hales and the A team beat Kirkley A to give an unexpected final line-up.

Gary Summons showed real class as he and Andy Key scored freely, 69 from five overs.

In reply, only six came from the first over but Aaron Beaumont, who remained not out, smashed 24 from Simon Key's over to get Hales A back on track.

A fun day was a fitting tribute to Matt's memory, with the teams congratulated for the way they played.

Paul and Jill Lovick and Jean Collins provided an excellent barbecue, with groundsmen Minty and Matt producing a quality strip.
