Beccles Town took a maximum haul from their trip to Great Witchingham A to move 18 points clear at the top of the Division Two of the Norfolk Alliance and become the first club in the league to reach the 100 mark.
Beccles recorded a 72-run victory at Walcis Park by posting 216-8 and then dismissing the opposition for 144 to make it four straight wins.
Captain David George lost the toss and Beccles were put into bat. Some good bowling paid dividends early on as the wicket of Michael Fisher fell, bringing chairman Chris Robson to the crease with the score on 11-1.
The talented Robert Porter suffered an unfortunate hand injury during the warm-up but showed no signs of letting the opposition know as he set about his business. Porter found the fielder and lost his wicket for 29 and Alex Wright followed him soon after for four.
With the score on 60-3 Hickmans Supplies man-of-the-match Cameron Robson joined his father in the middle and this proved to be the turning point. The pair complemented each other superbly with Chris giving the opposition no chances while scoring steadily while Robson junior combined textbook cricket shots with moments of flamboyance.
Cameron brought up his 50 with an elegant chip over the infield and raised his bat for the second time this season. The Robson partnership reached a brilliant 101 when both wickets fell in quick succession, Chris for 47 and Cameron for 64.
There were then notable cameos from Ben Milburn (14), Nick Smith (11) and the returning Matt Lowe (13) as Beccles set a decent target.
Witchingham’s top order were then blown away by fantastic spells from pacemen Alex Wright (4-28) and Stuart Watkins (2-42). The pair reduced the opposition to 41-6 with four of the wickets being clean bowled.
The home side mounted a comeback with a gritty 61 from Liam Channell but their target was always out of reach. Ian Ruddock added a further two wickets and it was left to Lowe and Smith to get a wicket each to seal the win. Beccles host Saham Toney tomorrow (1pm), with spectators more than welcome.
Beccles A (203-5, J McDowell 44, S McDowell 40) secured a 148 run victory over Mundford (55, C Read 5-22, I Norman 2-2). It’s Rocklands away next.
