A FREAK goal inside the first two minutes proved the winner for Bungay against Corton on Tuesday as they made it five straight wins in the Anglian Combination Division One.

But it took a stubborn rearguard action to keep the run going against the side manager Richard Daniels rates as favourites for promotion.

Twice Corton hit the woodwork in the second half as they fought determinedly to get on terms, but with Craig Hunting and Lee Henwood outstanding at the heart of the defence Bungay kept them at bay, and had their own chances.

Afterwards Daniels praised the whole side for “a brilliant battling performance and an excellent all-round defensive performance”.

The crucial goal came in the second minute as Danny Wilby and a Corton defender met a low cross and the ball ballooned into the air towards goal. And as the keeper, on his line, tried to collect the dropping ball it spun from his hands over the line, with Wilby claiming the goal.

Play was largely in mid-field as two good defences cancelled out any real threat. Corton drove an effort wide, the Corton keeper comfortably took a free-kick from Paul Hunter and Joe MacFarlane put a low effort wide after a solo run.

The second half saw much more action. Twice Corton forwards drove chances into the side netting and Hunting was lucky to see a deflection from a cross go wide for a corner.

Then Jimmy Bligh just got a touch to a fierce drive to see it crash off a post and away. But Bungay almost got a second when the keeper had to clear for a corner under pressure from Ed Collins.

Corton went close again following a free-kick with the chance again being stabbed into the side netting.

Corton then cleared their lines from a Bungay free-kick and Collins tested the keeper with a surprise 30-yard volley. In a quick Bungay break Collins set up MacFarlane for a low drive which the keeper blocked.

At the other end a low drive by Corton caught the outside of a post. MacFarlane did net with a low drive after another good Bungay build-up, but the referee had blown for a foul.

Next, Bungay host Gayton in the league (2.30).
