A goalless draw was all the Black Dogs had to show for a frustrating afternoon at Hoveton on Saturday.

They played some good football in an open game which they dominated for large periods, created several good chances, defended well when necessary and twice found the net with what appeared to be perfectly good goals.

But they were both disallowed, and so they dropped two Anglian Combination Division One points in their second game of the season.

Bungay looked up for it from the start and as early as the third minute created their first chance as Like Spear stabbed in an effort the keeper did well to divert for a corner. Shaun Whiteman headed narrowly wide from the corner. Then a cross from the lively Spear found John Riches stretching to divert a header wide.

Hoveton put one effort narrowly wide, but Bungay were having more possession and in another good attack in the 17th minute Elliot Patrick struck the bar after good work by Tom Hunter.

The Black Dogs appeared to have gone ahead in the 25th minute when Spear beat his marker and cut the ball back for Dom Mirner to divert past the keeper, only for the referee to disallow it for offside. Mirner had another chance soon after when he broke clear but delayed his shot and allowed the keeper to smother.

Before the interval Ryan Cook landed a header from Josh Knights corner on to the roof of the net, before Knights put another chance wide.

Hoveton saw two shots blocked in quick succession when they threatened, and Jordan Smith did well to get down to a low free-kick.

The second half was more even, and Hoveton had a good early chance when a high ball beat the Bungay defence, but Smith dealt with the danger. Knights went close for Bungay in the 71st minute and then, with 13 minutes left, Mirner beat the advancing keeper with a lob, only for the goal to be ruled out for an infringement.

In added time a fine block by the keeper prevented Knights giving Bungay what would have been a deserved winner.

Bungay: J Smith, T Daniels, R Cook, S Whiteman, E Patrick, L Spear (L Bilman), J Riches (N Wesby-Burrows), B Solomon, J Knights, T Hunter, D Mirner.

Tomorrow Bungay visit Cromer Town in the first round of the Mummery Cup (2pm).
