Beccles Golf Club's seniors had the rare opportunity not to worry about the younger set on Saturday, when the Seniors Cup was contested, with the over-55s battling for honours among themselves.

Nigel Edwards won the trophy, posting 89-23-66 beating Ray Walding (88-21-67) into second place. This trophy was introduced by Ray four years ago during his year as captain. Jim Redpath was third with 87-17-70.

The non seniors were led home by Eddie Bowles, whose 79-16-63 was the best of the day followed by Willie White with 82-18-64.

At the presentation club vice-captain Willie White thanked Sue and Sam for their help in staging the competition.

On Sunday a double event took place with wind and rain battering the common. A mixed doubles competition was followed by the Beccles Caxton charity competition when 28 members of the Caxton Club football teams played a nine-hole stableford to raise funds for Brendan English's daughter Gracie. The mixed doubles event was won by Marty and Sarah (24 points) with Bob and Rhona second on 15 points and third place went to Ray and Shirley (13 points).

The Brendan English charity event was won by Michael Gauld, second Willie White, third David Neech. Worst score prize went to Tony Pasque, longest drive and nearest pin both won by Paul Heany. Competition organiser for Caxton FC, Buster Cooper, thanked Beccles Golf Club for donating all green fees to the Gracie English fund. He also thanked Sam, Willie, Terry, David and Rhona for making the day a great success. Next year's event has already been pencilled into the Golf Club calendar.

On Saturday, the Butchers Arms Cup will tee off at 8.15am (draw 7.45).
