Mary Rayner, Joy Squire and Sue Bryenton-Rochard from the Hales Bowls Club have achieved the ultimate goal of reaching the national EBF finals at Skegness to be held at the end of August.
They will be competing in both the two wood triple and three wood triples after being crowned Suffolk Area A champions and, last weekend, the Suffolk county champions.
Even more remarkable is that they have fought their way through all the rounds, having to play all their games on away greens thus having no “home” advantage after the Hales Bowls Club lost the use their green, after 25 years' use, five years ago.
The bowlers have survived as a club over the past five years due mainly to the camaraderie that has always been one of the many features of their club and the goodwill of other bowls clubs who have allowed the borrowed use of their greens - notably Aldeby, Thurlton and Beccles Caxton.
The good news for the Hales BC is that work is soon to start on their new green which will be adjacent to the newly-built Hales cricket pitch which stands on a 7.5 acre site on Green Lane in the village. Funding and grants is still a big issue with the bowls club, but extensive successful fundraising over the last five years has meant that the start of the new development need be delayed no longer. All at the Hales Bowls Club wish Mary, Joy and Sue every success in their finals.
