After qualifying through their respective School Sports Partnership tournaments, Elm Tree Middle School and Halesworth Middle School travelled to Holywells High School in Ipswich to compete in the first-ever Suffolk Basketball Plate county final.

The idea behind this new tournament is to give those schools that are emerging into the sport a chance to compete along with established schools that have players who don't get the opportunity to compete. Both teams had been drawn in separate groups so didn't have to play each other in the league games.

Halesworth started their first game against a very strong team from Breckland Middle School at a blinding pace and after five minutes found themselves 6-0 up. By half-time they were in the lead by nine points.

They started the second half off at a slower pace and Breckland scored three consecutive baskets to pull the game back to four points. Halesworth, however, kept possession well and scored a late basket to clinch a fantastic win 20-14.

Elm Tree meanwhile beat Needham Market 10-4.

Halesworth then played All Saints Middle School team from the Sudbury area. It was a comprehensive performance with Halesworth making fast breaks down the flanks and defending well.

Eventually they ended up 16-7 winners. Elm Tree overcame St James Middle School side from Bury St Edmunds 9-7.

In the final Halesworth took a one-point lead. Both teams matched each other for pace and strength but it was Halesworth who had the better passage of play. Elm Tree pulled the score back and took a 4-2 lead.

Halesworth struggled to get the ball into the key but played a good passing game round the outside. A late Halesworth basket made it 4-4.

The second half saw Elm Tree host most of the possession but like in previous games struggled to score. They then lost the ball too often in the centre of the court and Halesworth scored two quick baskets for 8-4.

Elm Tree pulled one back to make it 8-6 and it looked like a close finish but Halesworth did well to hold onto the ball. They then finished off the match with the best basket of the day to make it 10-6 to Halesworth and send the trophy back to their school.

Both teams played very well against some tough opposition.
