AN admirable performance and a fine display of teamwork from all the players gave Beccles this hard fought victory over close rivals UEA.

Although everyone played very well, Lorraine Calver shone, putting in an excellent performance as sweeper, with her perfectly timed tackles and interceptions.

Very early on in the game, UEA saw their first opportunity slip by as Lorraine Greenwood in goal, and Maxine Gibbs, both got a touch to the ball as it headed straight for the corner and averted a certain goal.

Things then settled down with plenty of end to end play. Amy Thornton was much more at ease this week, playing the full 70 minutes at left defence with great support from Lorraine.

Heather Brand, Laura Cook, captain Maxine Gibbs and Ali Foreman all put in admirable performances, displaying their skills as they consistently got themselves out of tight spots. Although Beccles had more scoring opportunities, the finishing did not go their way and the score remained goalless up to half time.

In the second half, Beccles adapted their game slightly, and played more short passes, making the ball do more of the work.

Carol Maycock in midfield was allowed to dominate the centre and she took full advantage, being involved fully throughout. Heather Brand at right midfield also worked tirelessly, chasing everything, and showed grit and determination.

Ali Foreman made many successful runs down the left side of the pitch, creating many chances so it was just reward when she got the goal following a penalty corner that she initiated.

Max Gibbs received the ball, shot at goal and Ali, positioned on the near post, swept the ball home to give Beccles the lead and finally break the deadlock five minutes into the second half.

Despite the best efforts from both teams, neither side could penetrate each other's strong defence. With just two minutes to go, Beccles created another lovely move.

The passes started in defence, and worked their way to Debbie Mann in the opposition's half. She put through a long ball past the opposing player which was picked up by Annette Freeman who used her strength and skill to take on the opposition and secure all three points.

This week Beccles take on Lowestoft Railway away.
