A FORMER long-serving popular member of Beccles Golf Club was fondly remembered when his memorial trophy was contested on Saturday.

The David Downing Cup always evokes memories of David's individual golf style of striking the ball with both feet off the ground but still able to hit it down the middle.

He would have been delighted to know that the winner was an old colleague, George Savill who shot 79-14-65 in quite difficult conditions.

He beat runner-up David Dean Jnr (76-11-65) in a very close countback. Third place went to club captain Willie White with his 85-18-67.

Julie welcomed the competitors back to the clubhouse with a ploughman's lunch.

On Sunday, July 19 a few brave ladies contested their first-ever Sunday medal. High winds and heavy rain showers didn't dampen their enthusiasm and to their credit all competitors completed the 18 holes.

Fourth place went to Jula Janney, third Ann Brett (118-36-82), runner-up was Shirley Walding (113-34-79) and runaway winner of the medal was ladies captain Sam Cooper with her 78-15-63.

Thanks were expressed to Sam for her early preparation of the greens.

Captain's Day tomorrow (Saturday) will see the Captain's Cup contested (tee off 8am) which is an order of merit event.
