RONAN Hirst took a break from his National Karting Championship series to race at his local track Ellough Park at Beccles.

He had strong competition and any of the top five racers could have won the Honda Cadet class for eight to 13s.

Close behind were the up-and-coming Piers Luxford, Callum Furlong and the experienced local racers Mark Phelps and Sam Bush. Also visiting Beccles for the first time was Ethan Andrews who drove well all day on the new track layout.

The strong grid of 10 racers settled into an exciting and controversial day's racing. The heats were won by Hirst (2) and Wietska with McCarthy finishing strongly despite losing a chain.

In the final Hirst was on pole with Wieteska second and McCarthy and Huggan behind griding three and four. In the last few laps Hirst and Wieteska pulled away.

Coming into the last lap Hirst was leading by only a few hundredths of a second. Wietska took his chance on the first straight to leave Hirst with less than a lap to regain his lead. With two bends remaining Wietska went wide into the hairpin and Hirst moved into the gap he left.

When Wietska attempted to regain the racing line Hirst was already there and the two karts hit, causing Wieteska to spin and drop to fourth. This caused a yellow flag and Huggan took third place from McCarthy (a result which was later to be reversed by the clerk of the course).

Hirst went on to win with McCarthy second and Huggan third. The last lap incident took an hour to resolve by the CoC but Hirst kept his winning position and McCarthy and Huggan completed the podium.

Ronan Hirst is grateful for the continued engineering assistance from Harleston Engineering. He is looking for local business sponsors to each support a round of the British Championship.

The next round is in Cumbria on the May 15/16. Ronan would be pleased to visit the local sponsor and provide media coverage to promote their products and services.

Any interested local businesses should call David Hirst on 07789 965904.
