HALES Cricket Club hosted Alliance cricket for the first time in its history at the club's new 7.5 acre site on Saturday.

But the game was cut short by some much-needed rain with Hales on 34-2 from eight overs.

Hales made a lively start before Issy Hlengani was adjudged to be caught behind for four, Aaron Jones was free scoring before misjudging a booming in-swinger from Sprowston pro Phill Squire and Dan Andersen then took the game to Sprowston, both playing shots with confidence, as the new square passed this first examination.

With a long delay for rain the umpires called proceedings to a halt for the day with five points for Hales and leaders Sprowston six.

The club still enjoyed a social day and club chairman Pete Dye praised the excellent work that groundsmen have put in to get the ground ready.

He said: “Steve Claxton and Matty Lovick have put in a tremendous amount of time and effort over past three months, we have been really up against it, but their dedication has been outstanding for which the club have are very grateful.”

Dye added that coming up and seeing the ground, with the boundary rope and advertising boards around it was wonderful for everyone connected with the club.

Mary and Jimmy Dye provided an excellent tea, with the Lovick family running a barbeque as the club refused to let the weather put a dampener on a pivotal day in its 61-year history.
