Beccles Town beat Westerfield convincingly 5-0 to set up a trip to Capel Plough in the quarter-finals of the Suffolk Senior Cup.

The only downside to the day was a straight red card for top scorer Alan Remblance, who will now receive a long suspension.

Manager Broxup had the luxury of picking the same starting XI from the side that drew with AFC Norwich, leaving places on the bench for Ling, Wilson and new signing Shriw.

The cup tie was taking place at the third time of asking on a pitch which cut up during the pre-match warm-up.

Westerfield started the brighter, attacking at will. The back four of McMorran, Barham, Wigg and Greengrass had to be on their guards.

But Beccles had the first chance as Hurren found room just outside the area and flashed a shot just over.

Beccles' midfield trio of Peters, Day and Waterman began to pull the strings and start attacks and on 20 minutes Beccles hit two goals in quick succession.

McMorran sent a long ball over the back four and Remblance gave chase, robbed the defender and cut inside to smash the ball into the back of the net via the crossbar. Then Remblance turned provider. He latched onto a through ball and played a lovely ball inside for Hurren on the run to tuck the ball away for 2-0.

Beccles took their foot off the pace and Westerfield took advantage, creating two good chances which were squandered.

Both teams came out second half trying to grab the initiative but the expected onslaught from the visitors did not materialise. Beccles took the game to them and their youth and pace seemed too much for Westerfield as the College Meadow pitch continued to take its toll.

On 65 minutes Beccles were reduced, somewhat harshly, to 10 men. Remblance picked up the ball inside Westerfield's half and advanced on goal, leaving two players in his wake, only for a heavy touch to take the ball away from him. He seemed to lunge into a 50/50 tackle with the defender coming off with a gash to the leg. The referee gave Remblance his marching orders.

This really galvanised Beccles as they moved Waterman and Woods into wide positions with Day and Peters in the centre of midfield. Hurren operated as a lone striker.

Westerfield failed to make the extra man count as Beccles stretched their advantage. McMorran found time in the area to nick the ball away, causing a defender's outstretched leg to send him tumbling. Waterman stepped up to coolly send the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot for 3-0.

On 75 minutes Broxup made substitutions as 10-man Beccles began to tire, Wilson replaced the industrious Day, Ling replaced Woods and Shriw replaced Greengrass. This worked instantly as Wilson played in Hurren to race through one-on-one. His shot was well saved by the keeper but the rebound fell kindly for Waterman to tuck the ball away.

Moments later Peters picked another hole in the visitors' defence and sent Hurren away, only for the last defender to drag him down. The referee gave Beccles' their second penalty but did not send the offending player off. Waterman's penalty was well saved.

Cable in the Beccles goal was forced into an excellent save but that was the only real chance Westerfield created.

On 88 minutes Beccles wrapped up the tie when Hurren grabbed his second and Town's fifth. McMorran spotted his run and sent a great ball over the top for Hurren to advance on goal. He drew the keeper and chipped the ball over him from 20 yards.

This was an excellent win for a young Beccles side who showed character to battle back after going down to 10 men.

Next up it's cup action again at College Meadow as Division One Stalham Town visit in the quarter-finals of the Mummery Cup, ko 1.30pm.
