For almost 20 years Beccles Rowing Club has needed a purpose-built boathouse, and now this ambition has been achieved.

After years on the edge of the swimming pool pontoon and occupying a space which was far too small and suffered constant flooding, the club has relocated further upstream.

Celebrations followed a row-past where several of the 35 members demonstrated some of the fleet of boats. These included a coxed four and various sculling boats, several of which were crewed by some of the 16 Junior members, most of whom have joined since the club has been able to expand and buy additional boats.

The 75 members and visitors then had a chance to see these racing craft at close quarters.

Chairman Robin de Vere Green reminded the guests that since it was formed in 1989 the club has grown and prospered and a selection of trophies had been won.

So many people and organisations have helped with the project that it was not possible to mention them all on this occasion, but special appreciation is to be given to the Beccles Townlands Charity who bought this site and helped finance the new quay heading.

Substantial contributions were provided by the Foundation for Sport and the Arts, Suffolk Youth and connexions as well as Waveney District Council, Beccles Town Council Awards for All and SAVO, the Suffolk Association of Volunteer Organisations. The club is for ever grateful to all these organisations and club members who have raised substantial funds by their own efforts. Imogen Beedham deserves a special mention for her successful grant-seeking, for which she was given the Young Volunteer of the Year Award by the Amateur Rowing Association. This followed her Youth Volunteer of the year award by Beccles Town Council.

Special mention was made of all those who have helped during the construction and the finishing touches, especially Dave Barber for his superb signage. The opening was by Wynne Baldrey in conjunction with Noreen Taylor whose late husbands were amongst the founding members.

There followed a barbecue which was prepared by Seppings Butchers with the help of club members.
