WITH the cricket season fast approaching, Bungay Cricket Club will be visiting local schools after the Easter holidays to continue their commitment to widening the appeal of cricket and encouraging children as young as five to take part in the game.

Bungay CC's first XI captain and junior co-ordinator David Fuller, who will be organising the visits, said: “Cricket is a great way to have fun and play sport in the right spirit. At Bungay we encourage children of all ages to come and learn about getting fit, team spirit and values of the game which are sometimes lost in other sports.

Cricket has a great role to play in developing attributes such as agility, balance and co-ordination and it's important that these skills are not forgotten as we try and develop the future great sportsmen and women.”

In 2007 Bungay CC were awarded the Sport England Club mark which is awarded to clubs who achieve standards in safeguarding children and who are committed to the long-term development of all its members.

As part of the Bungay and District Sports Association, the club have some of the best facilities in the county and as of 2008 will be playing on a brand new playing surface on Walkers field.

To celebrate this new era in Bungay CC's history, the club are holding an opening ceremony on April 20.

This will include a first XI friendly against neighbours Beccles CC and also includes an under-10's fixture between the two teams during the tea interval.

The ceremony will begin at noon and all existing members and ex-players are welcome to come and witness the opening of the new ground and watching the next generation of Bungay cricketers.

With indoor nets coming to a close, Bungay CC will be moving outdoors and will be running a club training night for all club members and anyone who wants to play cricket.

This will be running on a Tuesday evening from 6.30-8pm, starting on Tuesday, April 8.

The Bungay CC junior training sessions will now be run on Thursday evenings at 6.15-7.15pm starting on April 17. This will be for all junior members up to school Year Eight.

All junior members of high school age, Year Nine or above, are invited to the club training night on a Tuesday evening.
