Blofield 3, Beccles Town 0

BECCLES travelled to Blofield for their Mummery Cup quarter-final and were knocked out of the competition after being spurned by Lady Luck.

Blofield, who have beaten Beccles comprehensively in the last two seasons in this competition, were overwhelming favourites. Beccles kicked off and took the game to the home side. They produced some fluent football and had the home defence under pressure.

Little was seen of the Blofield attack, their passes were disjointed and they seemed content to just boot the ball forward. Beccles, on the other hand, were playing all the football, and although clear-cut chances were at a premium Beccles bossed the half.

Just before half-time Alan Remblance made space for himself before rifling in a brilliant strike from 25 yards which the keeper magnificently kept out at full stretch.

With half-time approaching the Blofield bench were becoming increasingly annoyed at the failure of their team to penetrate the strong Beccles rearguard of Paul Storey, Tom Roberts, Neil Mcmorran, Alex Greengrass and goalkeeper Danny Cable.

Half-time came and went. With Beccles having to replace the injured Damon Bensley with Scott Barnard the game reached its pivotal moment, Ant Martin attacked down the left. He beat his marker before being brought down in full flight by the keeper, having rounded him. The referee pointed to the spot, but even though this was a scoring chance the keeper was only yellow carded.

There were long and prolonged protests by Blofield meaning Alan Remblance had a long wait before taking the spot-kick, and it went over the bar. This miss seemed to galvanise Blofield and deflate Beccles.

Blofield had their only good spell of the game. From a long throw a mele in the box ensued before Dick Crawley slotted home. Beccles still created a couple of half-chances before fate took another cruel twist. A Tom Roberts clearance rebounded off Blofield’s Neil Hurray to go past a helpless Cable.

To rub salt into the wounds and to give the scoreline a totally unjust proportion, Danny White added a third as Beccles had no choice but to go for it.

Tomorrow, Beccles are at home against high-flying Mattishall, ko 2pm.

Meanwhile, Beccles Reserves visit Bradenham Reserves in the CSM Cup tomorrow, ko 1.30pm.

Last weekend, they were very unlucky to lose 2-1 at home to Newton Flotman.

Playing their best football of the season they deservedly equalised when Jack Shreeve scored with a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the box. But Flotman scored with the last kick of the game.

This is a very young Beccles team and if they can keep producing this kind of play hopefully it will not be long before they can start to collect the points their hard work fully deserves.
