Bungay Bowls Club hosts its second tournament of the season this Sunday, and organiser Ian Gosling has attracted around two dozen pairs to compete for the Captain's Cup (sponsored by Bungay-based John Groom's Carriages and Catering).

With the entry basically split between a third from the host club, a third from the Waveney area and a third from outside Waveney competitors can expect tough matches in order to qualify for the finals where local bowlers have a fine record.

Heading the entry list are pairs entered by Blundeston's Peter Hurren, who were winners last year, and Bungay's Roger Bullen, the 2006 winner.

Between them they have also finished four times in the top four over the last five years.

Like Roger, several bowlers from the host club have appeared in the last four with Peter Nunn, playing with Mettingham's George Howes finishing runner-up last year. Jim Reid and David Sheppard finished third in 2008, while Barbara Wortley and Richard Allen finished fourth in 2007.

Qualifying matches start at 9am with the finals around 4pm. Refreshments will be served and spectators are welcome.

In the County Cup competitions Bungay players have made good progress.

In the Suffolk EBF Junior Cup the club has won two matches and have now reached the area semi-finals.

In the Bowls England Bert Edwards Cup Bungay beat Melton but lost to Framlingham, while in the Millennium Trophy they beat Brantham and face Sudbury.

In the county pairs Roger Bullen and Derek Hinsley have reached the quarter-finals.
