DEFENDING champions Weybread Rejects have opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Beccles and District Table Tennis League, which is sponsored by Alan Cook Accommodations and Woodton King's Head.

Last week, they had a straightforward 10-0 victory over Nutters. Hales Hopefuls are in second place following their 7-3 win against Hales Ants.

Jason Peck, Colin Westney and Aaron Hacon all won two matches each, but could not beat Barney Garrod who won all three of his matches for Ants.

Hales Gnats move into third place after a 9-1 win against Woodton Magpies, although this match involved several deuces and third legs and was therefore closer than the score suggested.

Sharon Cheer played particularly well for Magpies in defeating David Flatt. In the other match, Framingham Gull had their first win of the season against Hales Eagles.

The league recently held a 12-hour sponsored marathon at Hales Village Hall, in which non-stop table tennis was played.

Twelve players from the league took part and a total of £300 was raised. Proceeds were split equally between the league and the village hall.
