Bungay’s relegation to junior football was finally confirmed on Tuesday evening, following this narrow defeat at Corton.

The game followed a familiar pattern, with a determined and committed Bungay side matching their opponents for possession, but being unable to turn this into goal-scoring chances, and they were undone by a single second-half goal, writes Terry Reeve.

Chances were at a premium at both ends in a game played on a hard, uneven surface where players from both sides struggled to control the ball.

The home side created the first chance in the second minute, their forward shooting wide following a cross from the right.

Bungay battled hard to get a foothold in the game, but they were restricted to half-chances, a fine run by Dan Andrews ending when he lost possession on the hard ground. Then Charlie Jones shot weakly at the keeper after a good move involving Stuart Campbell, Joe McDonald and Tom Cole.

Andrews had the best chance of the first half after 32 minutes, but his near-post header from Matt Lowe’s free-kick went just wide.

Corton looked dangerous when in possession, but the Bungay defence did well to restrict them to long-range shots, and the half ended goalless.

Bungay’s second-half curse struck again only two minutes after the break as the home side took the lead, Kevin Oldman bundling home from close range from a low cross from the right.

Bungay worked hard but struggled to put moves together to threaten the home goal, and at the other end Gary Foyster saved well from a free-kick. Then Oldman nearly doubled the lead when his neat flick came back off the foot of a post.

The closest Bungay came an equaliser was after 68 minutes, when Andrews got his head to Matt Lowe’s near-post free-kick. When the ball came back off the keeper, Dale Smith’s close-range follow-up hit a post and went wide.

Bungay: G Foyster, M Lowe, D Smith, S Batt, D Lowe, J McDonald (D Scriven), S Campbell, T Cole, S Olley (C Sartain), D Andrews, C Jones (J Youngman).
